Born in Nagano Prefecture in 1947. Graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Oil Painting in 2002. He is based in Osaka and creates abstract paintings. Nakajima Mugi's works do not use paintbrushes, a common painting technique, but instead involve pouring paint onto a tilted canvas, making use of that tilt and gravity to create the work. The works are expressed by imagining color schemes, overlapping, balance, depth, and all kinds of images, and while they are intentional, they seem to be left to natural forces beyond the artist's own technique. The colors and shapes that appear by chance exist as if they were inevitable. He has the concept of being free from everything and being a medium that connects everything. At Art Fair Asia Fukuoka in 2024, he will be challenging himself to create a work on a large canvas measuring over two metres, experiencing new techniques and sensations. He has actively participated in many collaborative projects and events to date, expanding the scope of his creative activities.
