There is a very fine line between art and frivolity.

ぼくは絵の説明をする機会のあるごとに、その人間の行動や生い立ちがどれほど絵
に役立ったかを意味づけることが大へんこわいことをのべている。
絵というものは生い立ちをのべて、だからこのような絵が生れたと説明すると、
何だかそのような気がしてくるものである。だからこわい。
Each time I have the opportunity to explain a painting, I mention that putting meaning behind how much a person’s behaviour and upbringing contributed to his/her painting is a very scary notion. If you explain the background of an artist and say that this is the reason why the art was created, the viewer will begin to see it that way. That’s why it’s so scary.
Je souligne le risque qu’il y a, à expliquer le travail d’un artiste par son comportement et son enfance, chaque fois que j’ai l’occasion d’apporter des commentaires sur des oeuvres. Si on me dit que l’enfance de l’auteur explique telle ou telle oeuvre, j’ai l’impression que c’est en effet le cas. C’est pour cela que je parle de risque.
